Frequently Asked Questions

Why & How the ECO4 Scheme Started?

The ECO4 Scheme is the fourth phase of the UK government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) initiative, which began in 2013. The primary goal of the ECO scheme is to improve energy efficiency in homes, particularly for low-income households, to help reduce fuel poverty and lower carbon emissions.

Why it Started: The ECO scheme was introduced to address the dual challenges of rising energy costs and climate change. By making homes more energy-efficient, the scheme aims to reduce the energy bills of vulnerable households and decrease the UK’s overall carbon footprint.

How it Started: ECO4, which began in July 2022 and will run until March 2026, builds on the successes of its predecessors (ECO1, ECO2, and ECO3). The scheme places obligations on medium and large energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency improvements in eligible homes. These improvements include measures like insulation, heating system upgrades, and other energy-saving installations.

The government has continually refined the scheme to reach more households and better target those in need. ECO4, for instance, has expanded eligibility criteria and introduced mechanisms to involve smaller energy suppliers, ensuring broader participation and impact.

By supporting these upgrades, the ECO4 Scheme not only helps households save on energy costs but also contributes to the UK’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050

Eligibility:

You might be in luck! ECO4 helps low-income households upgrade their homes to be more energy-efficient. To qualify, you'll need to be receiving certain benefits (like Income Support or Universal Credit) and live in a property with an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G (don't worry, we can help you check this during a free home energy assessment!).

ECO4 focuses on helping people in private homes, whether you own it or rent it.

Absolutely! The number of people living with you can affect the type and amount of support you receive. More people usually means a higher energy demand, so the program tailors solutions accordingly.

Mostly, no! Your household income needs to be £31000

Grants & Funding:

The amount of funding depends on your specific situation and the type of upgrades needed. Think of it as a personalized plan to maximise your home's energy savings!

ECO4 focuses on helping people in private homes, whether you own it or rent it. In some cases, social housing and park homes might also be eligible.

Great question! Typically, there's no upfront cost for approved ECO4 upgrades. Ecology South West takes care of the application process and connects you with trusted partners for installation.

Coverage:

ECO4 tackles energy waste from many angles. This includes insulation (walls, lofts, etc.), heating upgrades like boiler replacements or heat pumps, and even renewable energy installations like solar panels. A qualified surveyor will assess your home and recommend the most effective solutions for you.

Here's a breakdown of some common ECO4 options:

  • First Time Central Heating
  • Solar Panels
  • Air Source Heat Pumps
  • Boiler Replacement
  • Wall Insulation
  • Same Room Insulation
  • Loft Insulation

While ECO4 is a powerful tool, it can't be combined with certain other government grants like Warm Home Discount or Boiler Upgrade Scheme. However, if your ECO4 work isn't yet underway, you might be eligible for additional fuel-efficiency grants.
